About this tool

Enter each category’s weight, earned score and maximum score. Choose explicit percentage weights or normalize positive relative weights. Pending work is separate from completed work.

Common uses

  • Compare course categories with different maximum scores.
  • Find the final-exam score needed to reach an entered course target.

How to use it

  1. 1.Enter every category’s weight and maximum; explicitly mark completed or one pending final.
  2. 2.Choose exact 100% weights or relative normalization, and enter the target percentage.
  3. 3.Calculate, distinguish earned contribution from completed-only average, and inspect exact required fractions.

Worked grading example

Different maxima with one pending final

Weights20/30/50; scores18/20 and40/50; pending final100; target80%
Earned42%; completed average84%; required final76/100; best possible92%

Homework contributes20% ×18/20=18%; midterm contributes30% ×40/50=24%. Earned contribution42%, completed-only average42/50 ×100=84%. Target80% requires(80−42)/50 ×100=76 points on the100-point final.

Limits and notes

  • 1–20 categories; names ≤80 Unicode code points. Decimal inputs use ASCII digits, no signs/exponents, at most 4 decimal places. Weights >0 to 1000; scores 0–1000000, maxima >0 to 1000000; score ≤maximum; target 0–100%.
  • At most one pending category. Its score is ignored, never treated as an earned zero. A blank score for a completed category is an error. Enter categories and weights for the entire course.
  • Exact fractions determine feasibility. Ordinary displays are approximate to 4 decimals; the minimum pending score rounds upward to 4 decimals, so it does not undershoot the target.
  • An arithmetic estimate from your entered rules. Institutional rounding, assessment increments, extra credit, letter grades and minimum passing requirements are not inferred; check your school’s policy.

Frequently asked questions

Are blank completed scores treated as zero?

At most one pending category. Its score is ignored, never treated as an earned zero. A blank score for a completed category is an error. Enter categories and weights for the entire course.

Why normalize weights?

Relative mode divides each weight by the sum of all entered weights, including the pending category; multiplying every weight by the same factor leaves the result unchanged.

How is the minimum required score rounded?

Exact fractions determine feasibility. Ordinary displays are approximate to 4 decimals; the minimum pending score rounds upward to 4 decimals, so it does not undershoot the target.
