About this tool

Reduce the visible area of each PDF page using top, right, bottom and left insets relative to its displayed rotation. Edit each page or apply a batch to selected physical pages. Preview original crop outlines and actual exported thumbnails; the original file stays unchanged.

Common uses

  • Remove visible scan margins without rescaling page content.
  • Use different crop amounts for cover pages and rotated interior pages.

How to use it

  1. 1.Choose one PDF to validate all page geometry and render original thumbnails.
  2. 2.Choose pt, mm or in; edit each page or apply four insets to a strict selected-page range.
  3. 3.Create the cropped PDF, inspect actual output thumbnails and download. Preserve the original for recovery.

Crop examples

Different insets on a rotated page

Visible box x20 y20 width200 height280 pt; rotation90°; top23 right17 bottom29 left11 pt
New CropBox: x43 y31 width148 height252 pt
Displayed output: 252 × 148 pt

Top and bottom map to the raw horizontal axis on a 90° page; original MediaBox and rotation remain.

Millimetre margins

Visible box x0 y0 width360 height480 pt; rotation0°; all four insets25.4 mm
New CropBox: x72 y72 width216 height336 pt

25.4 mm is exactly 1 in or 72 pt. Cropping still retains underlying content.

Limits and notes

  • One PDF up to 10 MiB and 100 pages; output up to 40 MiB. Reading, worker processing and rendering each have a cancellable 30-second deadline. Compressed files can still consume substantial memory.
  • Units: 1 in = 72 pt and 1 mm = 72/25.4 pt. Insets are stored in pt; switching units preserves entered geometry, with values displayed to six decimal places. Each inset is finite, non-negative and at most 100000 pt; the remaining displayed width and height must each be at least 1 pt.
  • Insets follow the displayed page orientation, including 90°, 180° and 270° rotations. They reduce the CropBox/MediaBox intersection. Zero insets preserve the original CropBox; changed CropBox stays inside that intersection. MediaBox, rotation, content and explicit auxiliary boxes are not resized. Invalid geometry, non-default UserUnit, encrypted PDFs, AcroForms and signature permissions are rejected.
  • Bulk range is empty for all pages or physical 1-based pages such as 2-4,6. Duplicate, overlapping, reversed or out-of-range values reject the complete batch. Every page remains in its original order; edits, resets, new files and locale changes invalidate stale outputs.
  • Cropping changes visibility, not redaction: hidden text, images, annotations and page content may remain and can be recovered. A new PDF does not preserve document-level bookmarks, tags, metadata or digital signatures. Thumbnails have a 160px maximum edge, omit annotations and may omit source images above 2 million pixels. Failed rendering prevents download; inspect the downloaded PDF at full size. No input upload or persistent storage.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping remove sensitive content?

No. Only the visible CropBox changes. Hidden content may remain recoverable; use an appropriate verified redaction workflow for sensitive material.

Which direction is top on a rotated page?

Top refers to the displayed thumbnail after its page rotation. The tool maps those insets back to the underlying PDF coordinate system without rotating or scaling the content.
