About this tool
Add visible black labels to a PDF without changing the original file. Use an empty prefix for page numbers or a case prefix and zero padding for Bates numbers. All pages remain in their original order; only the chosen pages receive labels.
Common uses
- Number report pages while leaving a cover unnumbered.
- Add sequential case identifiers to a selected document range.
How to use it
- 1.Choose one PDF, set the starting number, prefix and minimum digit width.
- 2.Choose a page range and one of six positions. Inspect the label list before export.
- 3.Create the numbered PDF, check its thumbnails and download the full document.
Numbering examples
Skip a cover and number selected pages
5 pages; range 2,4-5; start 7; prefix CASE-; padding 4
Page 2: CASE-0007 Page 4: CASE-0008 Page 5: CASE-0009
Pages 1 and 3 remain unchanged. Numbering is continuous across the selected pages.
Plain page numbers
4 pages; range 2-4; start 12; empty prefix; padding 0
Page 2: 12 Page 3: 13 Page 4: 14
Padding is a minimum digit width; it never truncates the number.
Limits and notes
- One PDF up to 10 MiB, 100 pages and 40 MiB output. File reading, worker processing and rendering each have a 30-second deadline and cancellation. Compressed PDFs can still use substantial memory.
- Prefix: up to 32 printable ASCII characters; Chinese, Japanese, emoji, control characters and other Unicode prefixes are rejected. Numbers use standard Helvetica metrics, with a PDF standard-font reference rather than an embedded font binary. Viewer substitution can differ.
- Start: 0–999999999; padding: 0–12 digits; font size: 8–24 pt; margin: 6–72 pt. Labels must fit inside the visible CropBox/MediaBox intersection. Quarter-turn page rotation is supported; non-default UserUnit, invalid geometry, encrypted PDFs and AcroForms/signature permissions are rejected.
- An empty range means all pages. Use physical 1-based pages, such as 2-4,6; reversed, overlapping, duplicate or out-of-range pages are errors. Selected pages are numbered in document order, without gaps for skipped pages.
- Editing produces a new PDF. Document-level bookmarks, tags, forms, metadata and digital signatures are not preserved. Page content and annotations may remain: numbering is not redaction, sanitization or legal evidence certification. Labels can cover existing content. Thumbnails have a 160px maximum edge, omit annotations and may omit embedded images above 2 million pixels. Inspect the downloaded PDF at full size. Failed rendering prevents download; input content is neither uploaded nor persisted.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to pages outside the range?
They remain in the output in their original position and receive no new label. The counter advances only for selected pages.
Can I use a Chinese or Japanese prefix?
The current label font supports only printable ASCII prefixes. Use case codes such as CASE-; unsupported characters produce an error rather than missing glyphs.
